I had a similar issue when I loaded the exe (was trying to connect to 
localhost). Does your log (i.e. the terminal output) get some SQL errors 
at the start? (Mine was something about not being able to bind 
value/attribute/thingy).

Try the debug build, for some strange reason it actually gets to the 
correct point of 'your backend/schema is too old' for me whereas the 
release build does not.
Newer release builds (with making sure all patches applied) seem to 
crash inside libmsql instead of the loop.
