It is a convention of the list and what the owners and participants prefer,
so it makes sense to adhere to that.

It may depend on your provider.  My provider allows me to record every
channel I pay for, including HBO, Showtime, and other premiums via firewire
(so I don't have a need for these other devices).  I believe another user
who has my provider can record everything he pays for with a cable card
device.  I am pretty sure if you have TWC, Comcast, or another "major"
provider, that is not the case.

See above.  But even if you can't record HBO and other premiums, you may be
able to record a bunch of cable channels like Comedy Central, ESPN, and
others.  YMMV.
