Followup from this, after some further experimentation this weekend:

I tried getting tzap set up to tune things. It has no trouble, even after a
warm start.

Furthermore, I noticed that the problem reoccurs after mythbackend is
restarted, even if the PC has not rebooted (somebody did say this before,
but at the time I misread it).

So the problem is not with the first attempt to tune after a warm start -
the problem is with the first attempt to tune *by Mythbackend* after
mythbackend starts, *unless* it immediately follows a cold start.

This would seem to point to it being a MythTV problem rather than a LinuxTV
one... are there any developers who are interested? This is causing around
half of my recordings to fail at present. Unfortunately I've reached the
end of my ability to diagnose, and as a student I'm unable to offer a
bounty :-(
