I intended to add:  the original netmask of 255.255.255.0 was inserted 
in the config page by wicd after I had entered the IP.  I assumed that 
some sort of magic had created it, but on trying to find some 
configuration help I've just seen the source script.  It says "Fill in 
the most common one" :-(
