everything I say is untested but describes the way its designed. If it
doesn't work, yet, its a bug!

Have you considered just adding mythmediaserver as an add-on to the
DS412? (basically turning it into a proper slave backend without
tuners) The idea being to record locally on the backend that has the
tuner attached. Then move the recording to your storage backend
automatically after the recording is done and not in use anymore.
Now you can put your new slave backend to sleep and configure a slave
wakeup script in the master backend to wake it up when its needed.

Using the DS412 as master backend for a network attached recorder might
work, too.
