On mine, the space doesn't go away, it's effect is just made less
dramatic given the difference in perspectives.

Indeed, while I do see more shows and episodes, I do still see a white
empty space between the episode description and the episode list.

What is strange is that if the white space was not meant to have
anything in it I wonder why the top of the episode list pane is not
glued to the bottom of the episode description pane.  Or maybe it is and
the problem is that the episode description pane is fixed height with
such a large height to accommodate much more text than any of my
episodes have.

I don't have any, at all.

My show list is to the very far left of the screen with a few pixel wide
bar of colour (presumably indicating the show genre) and all text.
About 1/3 the width of the screen.  The remaining 2/3 of width is the
episode description above the white space which is above the episode list.
