I have been playing around with a Pi for a kitchen TV. It's taken a bit 
of experimentation, but I have finally go there. Overall I am very 
happy. There are a couple of small issues like tearing of videos when 
you fast forward and slightly laggy controls, but for 38GBP, including 
case it's excellent.

I am using xbmc as a front end with the mythtv plugin and an android 
phone as a remote. If you want the least hassle install use raspbmc, 
which has everything built in. I am actually using Arch because I want 
the box to do some other stuff, which wasn't straightforward using rasbmc.
