 I'n my TV's menus it give me an option to pass "PCM" or "Dolby Digital".
 So far, the Dolby Digital passes everything I have fed it (up to DTS).

It's a cheap Emerson that my wife picked up on Black Friday at Walmart two
years ago.  It would be hard to find a TV with fewer bells and whistles.
