[mythtv-users] DVD plays with Kaffeine, but not with builtin Mythtv player?

Right, that's my thinking too.

That is my next step - I'm running mythfrontend straight from the login,
i.e. without a window manager, and I have not yet found the right place
to amend the startup arguments.
