Sorry found the answer above in the thread.

One point that maybe worth considering for the respectable goal of 
resource efficiency is that I see no reason that a dual LAN architecture 
can't be utilised, with a "private LAN" for the master to slave backends 
that is dedicated to the recording media traffic.  The normal LAN would 
then be unencumbered from normal playback and other duties.  There are a 
number of lowish power dual LAN motherboards around as used in firewalls.
