In Comcast land, the "first CableCard is free" includes counting
any STB as having the first CableCard (most newer STBs have
an internal CableCard, which may or may not be externally visible,
and those older STBs with embedded security modules are
included as having a CableCard for counting purposes). I
seem to recall that a DTA is not counted as having a CableCard,
but that too could be franchise specific. In any case, each
franchise is different, and the cost per card can vary. Note too
that if you are currently not paying the "HD" fee, that might be
another addition to the per month charge (again, franchise
specific pricing).

And for those concerned about buyers remorse, if you do not
need something today, you might want to wait to see if anything
interesting finally gets announced with shipping dates next week
at CES.
