I think you misunderstand me and you're certainly overestimating my linux expertise. The problem is that the hardware detection, if any, delivers the wrong result. I set out to install Linux Mint 11 Gnome using a usb flash drive. The first problem was that I couldn't use it without a high resolution monitor. When the installation was complete, the next problem was that I couldn't see the grub menu on the TV which I solved with the following Grub settings

GRUB TERMINAL=console
GRUB GFXMODE=640x480

The second is probably not necessary but I put it in just to be sure. I still can't see the boot sequence and I have automatic login set, so from Grub to desktop all I see is "Signal out of range". I suspect that nomodeset would let me see the boot sequence. I might try that sometime but, for now, I can live without it.

One consequence of this exercise is that I learnt the difference between a television used as a monitor and a monitor used as a television. It's all about upscaling / downscaling and native resolution.
