A useful tip, thank you, but I would rather that the problem did not exist. It is often said that Linux is more suited to older computers than Windows because it is less demanding of the hardware but this idea fails disastrously where the video hardware is concerned. Some time around 2010 one or more bright sparks decided that it would be a great idea to run the video at the highest available resolution at every opportunity by default, but unfortunately, the hardware detection system doesn't always get it right. This can apply to Grub, the boot sequence, the login screen and the desktop. I have an EeeBox B202 bolted to the back of one of my televisions and I have to use a separate monitor for installation and setup because the highest resolution acceptable to the TV is 1024x768 and even at that level I sometimes get the "signal out of range" message. This is one place where Windows scores over Linux - high resolution is a user choice, not the default.
