In the early days I remember kernel upgrades regularly causing me problems
with my NOVA DVBT tuners. (Now I don't upgrade kernels unless I really have
to)

The problem was always an incorrect kernel driver module getting
auto-loaded.  The fix was to blacklist the incorrect driver so that the
correct one got chosen..

Of course that may not be the problem here.
