Well, I am not sure what OpenSUSE version you are
running, but it is possible that while not quite as trivial
as simply installing a pre-compiled package, pulling
the source rpm and running the appropriate
rpmbuild --rebuild command might enable you to get
most of the benefits of someone else's packaging
work.  Possibly a middle ground if you do not want
to upgrade your entire OS.
