There's more to it than simply maintaining the same subject.  There is a
special "In-Reply-To" field in the header, which is used by mail clients to
reference previous emails in the discussion.  For example, your email had
the line...

> In-Reply-To:
<1365509519.30704.YahooMailClassic at web171503.mail.ir2.yahoo.com>

His do not have them.  Either he is starting a completely fresh new email
each time, rather than replying, or his mail client is utter garbage and not
populating it.
