That's exactly what was happening! It wasn't obvious, but syslog
showed some Network Manager activity a couple of minutes after
resuming which was it deciding to drop and recreate the connection. I
was running /usr/sbin/pm-suspend to suspend, and trawling through
/var/log/pm-suspend.log showed that Network Manager was not being sent
to sleep or woken up successfully. So after resume, it was in a
confused state and eventually decided that it needed to reconnect.

Turns out I had run into this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/1007924

Applying the changes described in the upstream bug report appears to
have resolved the problem.

I'm not sure why mythfrontend didn't recover from the dropped
connection, but I never saw it do so.
