That's correct.

But VDPAU isn't necessarily required for HD playback, and wouldn't be
supported anyway on Sandro's onboard graphics hardware.    As I
mentioned, my 6200 plays HD content just fine - and the 6200 doesn't support VDPAU either.

Well there's HD content and there's HD content.

Since he is living in Europe (France) any (recorded) HD content will probably be H.264.

MPEG-2 HD content is easy to decode in software.
H.264 HD content is quite demanding to decode in software.
