If you have two boxes with two cable sets, are you certain the device assignments haven't changed?  I had to create device aliases via udev rules based on USB jack location in order to be certain I was talking to the correct box.

Also, if you have H23's, you can also switch to using the http_directv script and get away from serial control altogether.
