Thanks, John. From what I understand, this appears to be somewhat 
similar to channel scanning issues I had in the past (and probably would 
still have), but I fail to see the connection to 0-byte recordings.

To answer your question, it cured my issue to some extent. I get 
significantly less 0-byte recordings, but unfortunately not no at all. 
So maybe my last comment would really be the best way forward:

I need to do a search on HW currently supported under Linux. It's been 
quite a while since I searched for that the last time.
