I will be moving over to .25 this Saturday.  But, I briefly installed 
.25 last weekend to play around with .mkv and subtitles.

There was an option, some place in the frontend settings that allowed to 
put up a black box behind subtitles.

I only had .25 installed for around 30 minute before reverting back to 
.23, so I won't be able to comment on your other points until this weekend.
