Thanks for making me look closer at the use flags.  I added "hls",
re-emerged, and it works great!  Here's what my use flags are now:

media-tv/mythtv-0.25_pre20120223  USE="bluray dvb dvd xvid -alsa (-altivec)
-ass -autostart -cec -crystalhd -debug -fftw hls -ieee1394 -jack -lcd -lirc
-perl -pulseaudio -python -raop -vaapi -vdpau -xmltv"
INPUT_DEVICES="-joystick" VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"
