Thanks, Gary.  I didn't mean I was running myth as root, just issuing 
that command from a konsole as root with mythfrontend already running:

su
<give password>
echo 128 | tee /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/prealloc
exit

and my question was, I hope, can I do that permanently?
