OK I have discovered the problem.  The reboot changed the order of the 
devices. So now my HD USB stick was on adapter1 whereas when I first set 
the system up it was on adapter0, so what I thought was an HD capable 
USB device wasn't.  The actual USB device capable of HD was connected to 
in source which didn't include HD.

I think the time has come to investigate some udev persistant rules.
