You probably won't be able to easily log into the local GUI if you
deactivate it, because several desktop-related things depend on it.

In my testing I've been able to bring the system down to runlevel 3,
then run "service messagebus stop", and then the problem is gone.
(Note the service "messagebus" on EL6 got renamed to "dbus" in recent
Fedoras. Also I'm not really sure what the systemd equivalent of this
would be for you.)

At that point I can run startx, etc. but that's not really ideal for
my setup. From what I understand, the convention in the MythTV
community has historically been to auto-login the frontend with
inittab, .xinitrc, etc. I'd prefer to use GDM's auto-login
functionality if possible. That means I want the system-wide DBus to
go ahead and run, but I also need to isolate the mythbackend process
from attempting to communicate with it. At this point I'm considering
running mythbackend in a chroot. I would love to know why mythbackend
/ Qt's event loop is hanging when trying to communicate with the
system-wide dbus-daemon.
