Custom compiling kernels is a process I ended up performing towards the 
end of CentOS 4 for a work machine. An environment akin to what you're 
describing.

Unfortunately, for MythTV there are whole slew of kernel modules that 
would need to be compile along with the custom kernel: nvidia, alsa, 
lirc. Maybe some others. I think the effort involved would outstrip the 
benefit.

I think the best target here is to move to CentOS 6 and it's more recent 
kernel. Unfortunately I'm having some stability problems with the ATrpms 
packages I'm using and I'm trying to gather more information on the 
atrpms-users list before I come here.
