One more piece of information, which might point in the direction that
something *can* in fact be done about the problem on the MythTV side of
things:

I can stream the same content from my MythTV box to the TV using
serviio. I just installed serviio, and shared a directory where I put
links to the original recordings whose names I prettified using mythlink.

The obvious donwside (apart from the uglyness of having to run a second
DLNA server next to MythTV) is that none of the metadata known to MythTV
is displayed through serviio.
