Thanks for the reply, a couple of follow-up questions:

Would one say that it is counter-intuitive to have one part use ebuild
while the other part has to to svn checkouts? I know the script is for
convenience and we're thankful to the author for that, but would it not
be best to cover the whole set of mythtv packages?

I'm not familiar enough with github to know what hash to put to achieve
this. Advise?
