Ok... Once again my existence in life is to serve as a warning to others....

I figured out the issue to my audio problems...  Long ago when I was
using Debian I had some audio issues with some mp3's and needed to
check "Force audio device output to 48kHz" in advanced setting.  I
forgot all about that.  It carried over to my new Mint 12 system and I
didn't even think of that.

Long story short.  I unchecked the box and now all the HD Audio works.
