There was a (reasonably) good reason. The protocol
was changing rapidly enough that clients that "faked"
the protocol version were causing difficulties (either
with the client, or the backend). The change to
using a magic number would (in theory) force the
out-of-tree developer to at least consider having to
review the protocol changes and update their codes
as appropriate to provide real multi-protocol paths,
rather than just faking it and then the user blaming
MythTV when things broke badly.

With the UPnP support, and the newer (more stable)
services API support, more of the potential client
functionality can be performed without needing to
use the internal protocols (which, just like the
linux internal structures, may change at any time).
