You might try a cron from the other box, to send a magic packet to the sleeping box, and wake it with 'Wake on Lan' (assuming your motherboard NIC chipset supports that). A very minor load on the sending box, to fire off that packet every...however minutes.

I use the other box primarily to test new versions an new features of MythTV, so it is not always on.

The trick/workaround of using an ACPI Alarm proposed by Michael Watson is probably a better option for me.
I might look into that in the future.

My main goal getting an UPS is the graceful shutdown as I have had problems in the past with corrupted database after power outage, and that is working very well.
