I think the slap in the face was from James. His counterargument
seemed to be "why would anyone use MythTV if not to avoid paying
for WMC?"

Yes quite. James, you were overlooking some really good advice here: one
of the most impressive things about MythTV is the use it can make
of program listings. You just have to tell it a series or film you
want, and it does all the jigging around finding ways to fit
the recordings in with whatever limited number of tuners you have.
It can prioritize HD. It can avoid old shows - all sorts of things.
But it needs good data. $25/year is very little for that.
