An alternative might be to use a wireless bridge client - many adapters and access points can be put into client bridge mode.

For this, the wirieless is between your access point and bridge, while the computer is connected via ethernet. This means things like WOL should work directly (the wireless link acts like a trnasparent bridge - just a lossy, slow bit of virtual wire), and potentially you can position the wireless antenna where you get the best signal (which might not be stuck on the back of the computer box).
You would need to leave the wireless bridge powered on all the time for WOL to work, otherwise you could power it off with the frontend.
