Sorry to resorect an old thread, but I did some digging around and found
comment:22 in Ticket#4872 says, "It is possible modify this patch to allow
also the zoom on 16:9 content when displayed on 4:3 tv ?"
So it sounds like it was never designed to detect pillar boxes, only letter
boxes (and yes, I did have VDPAU turned off). :(
