[mythtv-users] Submenus within xml menu file

I would like to generate a cascading menu system within a theme flat .xml file

I'm aware of the
    <button>
        <type>TV</type>
        <text>some text</text>
        <action>MENU anothermenu.xml</action>
    </button>

Is it possible to render the buttons as a list, and have a submenu
displayed if the button is selected. i.e. the action is to display
another set of options within the same file?

I'm no C expert, and would like to avoid going to the trouble of
producing a whole new plugin!
