Correct.  Telnet is a 7-bit ASCII protocol, where the 8th bit indicates 
the use of control codes.  The frontend control socket will send and 
receive UTF-8 for certain queries, which will be misinterpreted as 
control codes by a telnet client, resulting in unpredictable behavior.
