Set your Paint engine in 0.25+ to auto and start mythtv-setup with 
-geometry 800x600 (or 1280x720 or whatever)...

Note that auto is not the default--because of all the broken 
hardware/drivers/configurations on which OpenGL says it will work, but 
doesn't.
