Don't disregard external factors for tearing. I use a minimyth front-end and 
experienced tearing we couldn't resolve no matter what I did. (This was a box 
set-up with a VIA board and obviously non VDPAU.)

Last December, the TV died and we had to go get another one. (Why does this 
always happen just before Xmas?)

Plugged the new TV in and without changing /anything else at all/ there was no 
tearing. Seems our new display could handle the output better than the old one did.
