I was also trying to deal with this issue.  In my case I have an NVIDIA 
8400GS card running vdpau.

I following the directions from the WIKI and added vdpaumaxbuffers=50 to 
the content filter lines for the vdpau.  I can't find the specific link 
now but I'm sure if you sure the WIKI you will find it.

It didn't eliminate my problem with the waiting for video buffers but it 
dramatically decreased them and made other things like switching to the 
guide work much better.  The messages only come up now when the video is 
starting and not during play so for the most part it resolved my issue.
