You didn't mention this, but you have two sound cards?
And you are trying to make the second card the primary card?

Sorry about that. You are correct.
There are 2 sound cards in this system.
Here is the relevant output from lspci -v

04:01.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
	Subsystem: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 17
	I/O ports at cc00 [size=256]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: C-Media PCI
	Kernel modules: snd-cmipci

03:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation High Definition Audio
Controller (rev a1)
Subsystem: ZOTAC International (MCO) Ltd. Device 2117
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
	Memory at dfbfc000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [68] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [78] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

The C-Media CM8738 is "/dev/dsp1".
I was not really trying to make anything the primary audio card.
Just want the web browsers to use utilize the same audio output device.
