Sounds like RAM errors.
The way (_THE_ _WAY_) to check for drive errors is to examine
the output from "smartctl -a /dev/sdX".  Pay particular attention to
the error logs near the bottom, as well as the "reallocated sector count"
data near the middle of the output.
