Buyer beware when purchasing from Newegg...

Earlier this year, I purchased two drives from them. Their packing was
similar to that previously described: a single layer of bubble wrap
taped around the drive and placed in a similarly sized cardboard box.
One drive worked properly and the other was DOA. I naively followed
their RMA process and sent the DOA drive back (at my expense, of course
- so factor return costs into your total cost of ownership). They
refused to replace the drive since they found a tiny indentation on the
bottom edge of the SATA connector, which they asserted was indication
that I had damaged the drive. I'm fairly experienced with drives and
had not mishandled it in any way. Regardless, their return policy
allows them to refuse any replacement if they claim an item is damaged.
Because of the way the policy is worded, it is assumed that the item
left their facility in perfect condition and *any* damage is the
purchaser's fault. This would include anything that happened during
shipping. Obviously, there is no way to disprove their assertion.

I did finally get them to replace the drive after a number of
frustrating contacts and letting them know I was prepared to involve my
credit card company and the State Consumer Protection division. Newegg
is no longer on my supplier list.
