Mine is to the side and projector rather than TV so a dim display is a bonus. I'm interested to navigate mythmusic or something similar to play music without turning on the projector.

Well it is not actually dim.
It is possible adjust the intensity of the backlight in the LCDproc config file. But the changes affects both letters/icons as well as the background so the contrast stays more or less the same.
