Giles,

Odds are good that you're running into a quirk with sudo which I ran
into some time ago.  Even though you have it set up to not require
passwords, it still demands one when running in a non-terminal
environment.  To verify, try invoking in a way that will log your
command along with standard output and error output to a file you can
look at to see what's happening.  IIRC, I got so annoyed at the time
trying to fix the problem that I gave up and switched to running as
root.  Maybe you'll have better luck.
