Slightly OT but about a decade or so ago I got my new TI laptop fresh with
Windows 98 and a US Robotics PCcard modem. Slapped the pccard into its slot
but couldn't get the computer to react to the modem at all so I returned it
and got another one. Same deal. Called TI service and after several calls
over several hours with no progress moved on to US Robotics with the same
exercise. Customer service suggested that this modem was also bad and I
returned it a for a different model. Tried again on the 3rd day again with
phone calls back to customer service and again no luck. At this point the
service tech asks me for the serial number on the modem. When I went to
eject it I accidentally bumped the card all the way flush into the notebook.
Windows popped up and loaded the drivers and the modem was working. The
reply from the service tech... " You know, we make these things plug and
play. All that we ask you to do it plug. Can't you at least do that?" :-/
