Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, Virgin Media here in the UK have seen fit to produce an OSD that requires different keypresses depending upon the onscreen element i.e. there isn't a universal "exit" button. Most screens respond to "TV" but others require an "OK" button press. Sending a combination of both codes could exit one element only to open another, hence my desire to detect what's actually on screen before sending the "correct" button press.
