IIRC, the 8x00 series are designed to work with AMD CPU's and the 9x00 
series with IBM. The OP has a Core2 Duo.

I could be wrong. But you are correct that the older ones do not support 
the newer codecs.

For the best support, you want a GT220 or better. But you probably do 
not need much more than the 220 as it will easily do the job. Anything 
newer/more powerful will require way more power and produce more heat.

(You may want that, however, depending on where you live!)
