Did you try Alt+F4?  If you're using a remote you can probably make 
irxevent send Alt+F4 instead of Escape.  Something like this in 
~/.lircrc might work:

begin
         prog = irxevent
         button = ESCAPE
         config = Key alt-f4 CurrentWindow
end
