and the first minute of the next 35 recordings that attempt to start on 
this input, and an additional 20 recordings that should have occurred

You can't just look at the "now"/the current recording.  MythTV is a 
/much/ more complicated system.

It's /not/ a simple problem to solve.  IMHO, expecting drivers to tell 
us when the driver or hardware encounters an error is not a cop out.
