^^^^^ I just found the problem.  You seem to be operating under the
assumption that the current protocol is well structured.  It's not,
and the MythTV developers are well aware of this.  They are just
pumping SQL across the wire, which barely counts as a network protocol
at all.

Once they get rid of the direct DB communications then this is
something that might become feasible, but the priority of that versus
creating other useful features have prompted them to conclude that
backward compatibility is a lower priority.

Since it's their time and energy, they get to decide what they think
is important.  If you disagree, roll up your sleeves and work on the
things that you think are the most important.
